Siemens Fossil Power Generation recounted Thursday it is closing its plant in Hamilton, Ontario, and relocating the Canadian operation to North Carolina. The turbine producing operation that's more than a hundred years old will close by July 2011, dumping 550 roles over 3 shifts, the Hamilton Viewer reported. Plant Operations Chief Brian Maragno said to the paper the influenced employees might be offered work at other Siemens' Canadian operations or in the Charlotte facility.
Some 350 of the employees are members of the Canadian Autoworkers Union, which issued a statement censuring the choice to shut the plant as "entirely unacceptable. " "Rather than keeping the work in Canada, where the facility is set to produce the turbines, the company is selecting to send it to Charlotte, North Carolina, where it'll put $130 million into an expansion, " the release expounded. "That enlargement should occur here in the town of Hamilton. ".
