Healthcare carries on recruiting boom as national economy struggles

The United States healthcare industry carried on to get bigger even as the rest of the economy suffered, with employment rising in May by around 17,400 positions. Over the prior twelve months, the healthcare sector has added an average of 24,000 jobs every month.

Based on the recent employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the largest healthcare job gains had been in ambulatory care settings. Roughly 10,100 ambulatory care jobs had been added in May. In May, many hospitals added jobs, though at a much lesser rate, with an overall rise of 4,100 positions.

The prevailing job growth region in ambulatory care was in outpatient care centers, which added 3,300 jobs. Physician workplaces added 2,200 jobs, whereas home healthcare services in fact lost 400 jobs. Residential and nursing care services also experienced hiring boost in May, to the tune of 3,200 jobs.

Generally, total non-farm payroll service rose by 54,000 in May, and the national joblessness rate increased slightly to 9.1 percent. The number of jobless rose by 167,000 to 13.9mn. The work force, at 153.7mn, was moderately unaffected over the month. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 or more weeks) rose by 361,000 to 6.2mn. The long-term unemployed presently make up about 45.1% of unemployed people.
