Swiss pharmaceuticals firm Novartis has declared job cuts at its Horsham plant in West Sussex. A spokesman from company asserted Novartis intended to cut the total labor force of 950 at the plant by 550. The budge comes as a further blow to the United Kingdom's pharmaceutical R&D (research and development) industry.
In February, Pfizer stated it would close its R&D (research and development) facility at Sandwich in Kent, which employs 2,400 folks. Of the 950 workers on the Horsham campus around 330 are devoted to respiratory research.
"With noteworthy changes in healthcare systems intended to contain or reduce cost, this decisive assessment and the subsequent possible changes to the Novartis United Kingdom organization are important to maintain considerable investment in modern drugs and our research work in the United Kingdom," said Sue Webb, GM at Novartis, in a statement.
The drugs business in general is scaling back speculation in research and development, in spite of the need to discover new drugs as the patents on older medicines expire. The Pfizer and Novartis plans will be executed in the upcoming 2 years.
