Research strongly means that a long stretch of unemployment compensation essentially lengthens the high rate of unemployment. It's an unlucky cycle that is probably going to continue for awhile.

Unemployment compensation is the sort of governmental compassion that sometimes has support from both Left wingers and Republicans, thus the bills that have passed thru Congress to increase a spread of unemployment benefits. While it varies from state to state, standard benefits put cash in the pockets of the underemployed for twenty-six weeks, with the likelihood of a thirteen week extension. But due to legislation passed in the recession, unemployment compensation can now run as long as ninety nine weeks. ( Time )

Take a Central Texas man who was let go from a semi conductor company in December 2008. He knew the layoff was coming, so he asked for unemployment benefits straight away. Over the months, he requested the mandatory number of roles to maintain his compensation. He requested low-paying day-care positions and competitive jail guard positions--neither of which he was qualified for and neither of which he intended getting. Now he's signed up to a 6 month coaching course for a new career, which is absolutely paid for by the govt. This sounds like a superb opportunity, except there's no promise of help with job placement when the course is finished.And even once the course is done, his benefits remain for 1 or 2 more months, giving him no pressure to discover a job.

The example above isn't everybody's story in this recession, nevertheless it is maybe more classic than not. Economic experts like Bruce Meyer and Steven Davis from the School of Chicago agree that unemployment compensation has a tendency to give tiny incentive to find work.
